Chef JJ Johnson is an award-winning chef, author, and entrepreneur celebrated for his bold approach to global comfort food. His cooking bridges the food traditions of West Africa, Asia, and the Americas, honoring cultural roots while presenting them through a modern lens.
Raised between New York City and the Poconos, Chef JJ’s passion for food began early, inspired by his Afro–Puerto Rican grandmother. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, he went on to found FIELDTRIP, a Harlem-based fast-casual restaurant that celebrates the world’s rice traditions and sustainable sourcing. His philosophy centers on rice as a symbol of cultural connection — a common thread linking diverse communities across the globe.
Beyond the kitchen, Chef JJ is a strong advocate for food equity and sustainability, partnering with local farmers and creating pathways for inclusion in hospitality. He leads Ingrained Hospitality Concepts, a group focused on cultural storytelling through food.
A James Beard Award winner and Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, Chef JJ has also been featured in Netflix’s Street Food, HBO Max’s Selena + Chef, and Cleo TV’s Just Eats with Chef JJ. His cookbooks, Between Harlem and Heaven and The Simple Art of Rice, celebrate heritage, tradition, and the shared language of flavor.
